I posted about this a bit on Friday, but I wanted to write a full post about it because it’s been weighing heavily on my heart. If you didn’t watch the video before I suggest you take a look below, it’s not that long.
All jokes about his misuse of tense and turning ‘delivered’ into ‘DELIVERT’, I see a troubled young man who is being paraded around and encouraged to hate himself because other people do. I believe that gay people are born that way, just like I was born a Black woman. He’s at a COGIC (Church of God in Christ) convention and the pastor is going on and on about love and how his faith in God’s love is what “delivert” him. But the “love” that the “pastor” is referencing isn’t God’s love. That’s not the love that’s talked about in my bible. The bible states that we’re supposed to love our fellow man unconditionally. No judgment, no “I love you but not your ‘sin’” type mess, just love. We all fall short and sin every day, and there’s no ranking system on sin in God’s eyes. As humans we might rank murder or rape higher than body piercings, tattoos or wearing leggings (wearing mixed fabrics) but God doesn’t. In fact, if we’re going to get really specific all of these “laws” were stated in the Old Testament, not the New Testament.
I feel like people use religion as a crutch. The “man shall not lay with another man as he lay with a woman” verse is used a lot when discussing homosexuality, but I feel like that was because of the times. Back then they were trying to populate the world, the more children a couple had the better off they were, the more hands they had to help out on the family’s land. Women who were barren or who had any kind of fertility issues were cast out of society too. That was a different time, a different society. Back then women were seen as property, first of their fathers and then their husbands, they were stoned in the street if they had premarital sex (but their male counterparts weren’t), they were forced to marry their rapists. I could go on and on, but I think we all can agree that times have changed.
Some say it’s a sin for a person to be gay, that they’re damned to hell, but the same thing was said about Black people. I don’t believe either of those statements to be true, and I hope that one day society will feel the same. This self-hate has got to stop, people need to be accepted for who they are, Black, White, Gay, Straight, Bi, Trans whatever. If this young man wants to wear a purse and make-up and date “mens” then he should be able to. He should be loved and accepted as a gay man, and not be forced to be “delivert” from that. Now I know that this is a touchy subject and most tend to stay away from this on blogs, but what do you guys think? I’d love to read your comments, or if you’d prefer you can email them to me.
