It's time for another installation of the 'Dating Chronicles'! I know that I usually talk about my dating experiences with guys during this series, but today's post is going to be a bit different. This post has been a long time coming, I know a particular co-worker who's been asking me about it (or any post in this series) but I finally got the inspiration to write and post it today.
One of my favorite podcasters/entertainers/all around personCrisslealways says words mean things and though this usually follows a ridiculous entertainment story or listener letter on the podcast 'The Read' it pertains to many things in life. Recently the term female has become a popular derogative term for women. For me, it's like saying negro or colored instead of blatantly calling me the n-word. Guys (immature ones) will use the term female instead of using bitch like it makes things better, and it really doesn't. Now I'm not saying that the term female shouldn't be used to describe a woman, because it should as long as it's used in the correct format. The word female is an adjective and should be used to describe a noun, not used in place of the noun.
IE: Sarah Thomas is the NFL's first full-time female game official.
In that sentence game official is the noun and female is being used to describe that. That sentence is perfectly acceptable.
IE: Females nowadays don't know how to cook and clean, but expect a man to go out and not only bring home the bacon but clean it too.
There are SO many things wrong with that sentence. I didn't make it up, I actually heard it from a guy who was trying to court me. In that sentence the term female is being used as a noun (and he said it in a bitter tone so I interpreted it as bitches), but then he turns around as used the term man! So it's not like he didn't know the proper way to use the words, he just chose not too use them properly. In my opinion, using the term female relegates women to a less-than status. Like we're less than human beings, we're just a description. I often correct guys and say what? a female cat? female dog? female horse? just to throw them off and make them aware of their offensive actions. Using the term male instead of man/guy/fellow/lad feels terrible coming off the tongue, but the term female instead of woman/lady/girl doesn't? Give me a break! Words mean things people; it's not about being PC it's about being respectful! If you want to call me a bitch then have the balls to do so, don't hide behind the term female.
